Kumkol

Kumkol is an oil field in the south of the country, discovered in February 1984 by the South Kazakhstan oil exploration expedition: while well 1 was being drilled, a blowout came from the Lower Neocomian. The field gave its name to a whole group of developments and became the base of PetroKazakhstan Kumkol Resources and Turgai Petroleum.

Infrastructure
Oil from the Kumkol group goes into the Kumkol — Karakoin — Shymkent pipeline to the Shymkent refinery and into the Kenkiyak — Kumkol — Atasu — Alashankou system for export to China. The associated gas feeds a local power station and reinjection.
