The legal entity was created on 12 March 2014 as the KazMunayGas Research Institute of Production and Drilling Technologies LLP — according to the company, on the basis of the Kazakh Institute of Oil and Gas JSC (KING) and its subsidiary institutes — and was renamed KMG Engineering on 4 May 2019; KING itself did not become part of the institute and has been a separate private company since 2015.

In May 2018 the subsidiary institutes became branches: KazNIPImunaygas (which traces its history to the KazNIPIneft institute, 1970) prepares project documents for the Mangystau assets — Ozenmunaigas, Mangistaumunaigaz, Karazhanbasmunai and the KazGPZ gas processing plant — and the Atyrau branch (the former NII Caspiymunaygas LLP) for Embamunaigas and assets in Aktobe, Kyzylorda and West Kazakhstan regions; the head office, according to the company, handles management, monitoring of exploration projects, conceptual design and design review.

The branches prepare exploration work projects, reserves estimates, field development projects, technical designs for well construction, working designs of field facilities and environmental documentation; according to the company, they also run laboratory centres (core, PVT, oilfield chemistry, drilling fluids).

The institute works almost exclusively for KMG group companies and their joint ventures; the private NIPI Kaspiymunaigaz JSC in Atyrau is a separate organisation and not part of the institute.

In-house research and design centre of KazTransOil JSC — a branch of the company, not a separate legal entity; it is based in Astana, with design-estimate bureaus also in Aktau and Pavlodar. According to the company, it was created on 3 September 2000 as the Science and Technology Centre branch and renamed the Research and Development Centre in May 2020; since 25 December 2023 it has been located at M. Gabdullin Street 2 in Astana. It prepares design-estimate documentation for the investment programme and overhaul of KazTransOil's own facilities — trunk oil pipelines, oil pumping stations, tanks and tank farms — together with the environmental sections and emission-limit projects for them. According to the company, the centre runs laboratories for oil and petroleum products, physical and chemical methods, and corrosion; at the end of 2025 the branch had 127 employees (KazTransOil annual report). It designs only for KazTransOil itself: no work for outside clients was found in public sources, and all licences are held by KazTransOil JSC.

Kazakhstan company of the Dutch consulting and engineering firm Witteveen+Bos — Witteveen+Bos Caspian LLP, with offices in Almaty, Atyrau and Aktau; according to the company, its first office in Kazakhstan opened in Aktau in 2001, followed by Atyrau in 2003 and Almaty in 2007. By its own description, it designs civil and marine infrastructure for oil and gas projects rather than process plant: artificial islands and ice-protection structures, marine access channels, ports and cargo offloading facilities, access roads, industrial wastewater treatment. According to the company, its experts have worked in Kazakhstan since 1997 and have designed Kashagan's islands since 1998; for Tengizchevroil it carried out, from 2012, the feasibility study, environmental impact assessment, surveys, FEED and detailed design of the Cargo Transportation Route (CaTRo), and for NCOC the design of the Kashagan marine access channels from pre-FEED to detailed design (the first phase of the channels was then planned to be operational at the end of 2021). NCOC's mandate for the front-end engineering of the channels was also reported by Energy Intelligence in April 2021. Outside oil and gas the company works on water management, urban mobility and remediation.
