Kill fluid density for a workover

Kill fluid density from the reservoir pressure and the depth of the top perforations, with the overbalance required by the Kazakhstan industrial safety rules (item 874).

Formula
ρ_e = P_r / (g · H)ΔP = min(k · P_r, ΔP_max)ρ = (P_r + ΔP) / (g · H)ΔP_max = 1.5 MPa (H ≤ 1200 m), 2.5 MPa (H ≤ 2500 m), 3.5 MPa (H > 2500 m)

The overbalance may not exceed 1.5 MPa (wells down to 1200 m), 2.5 MPa (down to 2500 m) and 3.5 MPa (deeper) — the cap is applied automatically. The kill pressure (hydrostatic plus dynamic) must stay below the fracture or loss pressure (item 875). Before the kill, keep two well volumes of kill fluid at the well (item 873) — see the well volumes calculator.

Inputs

You can change a field's unit: the value is converted to the formula's units automatically.

P_r

From the latest survey (build-up, downhole gauge) or the static fluid level.

H

The top of the formation if it is not perforated.

k

Rules: 10–15 % for wells down to 1200 m, 5–10 % down to 2500 m, 4–7 % deeper.

psi and psia are absolute pressure; gauge units (barg, MPa(g), psig) are above atmospheric (101.325 kPa = 14.696 psi). Pressure differences in the formulas do not depend on this.

Results are engineering estimates from standard formulas; for design decisions check them against the codes, project documents and specialists' calculations. The formulas carried over from the original set are unchanged, and their errors are described in the notes.
